Thrift Stores, Teething, and the Best Compliment You've Ever Received

In this episode, we talk about everyday joy moments—the ones you notice and the ones you create. Sara shares her friend Jim's $12 thrift store leather shoes and the compliments that landed from her Threads community, like being told "you may have saved a soul" and "a lovable dork." Lacey shares watching her teething baby and her son who just lost his front teeth discover they match. We talk about the difference between passive joy (noticing what's already there) and active joy (making it happen), and how compliments might be the easiest way to practice active joy. If you're looking for a simple tool to try today, this one's pretty accessible.

Lacey:

Welcome to Joy Moments where we spread moments of joy throughout the

2

:

world just to create some joy ripples.

3

:

I am Lacey here with my daughter Violet,

so who knows, which will get from her.

4

:

with my co-host Sarah.

5

:

Hi Sarah.

6

:

Sara: Hi Lisa.

7

:

I am more than nine months old, so, and

who knows what you'll get with me either.

8

:

I am laughing because Violet's

getting a little, bouncy treatment

9

:

right now, and it's making me smile.

10

:

I've got some joy submissions

from my friend, Mr.

11

:

Jim, who's come up a couple of times.

12

:

He's got.

13

:

Lacey: Gym fan of Jim.

14

:

Sara: He, yes, I could do a whole

show just about the amazingness of Mr.

15

:

Jim.

16

:

he gave me seven, Well, so

here's what's really funny.

17

:

he sent me this text as a standalone

and it says JM number one, JM

18

:

number two, all the way down.

19

:

And when I first looked at it,

I thought it was gym moment.

20

:

It took me forever to realize it was joy.

21

:

Moment

22

:

Lacey: I mean, they are gym moments.

23

:

Sara: Jim Joy.

24

:

I know Jim is laughing listening to this

right now, so I'm gonna drip these out.

25

:

I'm not gonna do them all

today, so, I'm gonna pick one.

26

:

Lacey: Gym Joy moment number one.

27

:

Sara: Gym Joy moment.

28

:

It's actually number five

because this one spoke to me.

29

:

'cause I am a huge thrifter.

30

:

I bought a pair of expensive leather shoes

at the thrift store today for 12 bucks.

31

:

Very stylish and comfortable.

32

:

That feeling of getting an

awesome buy at a thrift store.

33

:

A maze, amaze and Jim's.

34

:

Jim's pretty on point with some fashion

options, so I'm excited to see Jim's

35

:

new leather shoes from the thrift store.

36

:

Lacey: I gotta be honest, I have

never been a thrift store person,

37

:

but I think that needs to change.

38

:

Sara: Would you like to hear

my background of thrifting?

39

:

Lacey: Yes.

40

:

Always.

41

:

Sara: Okay.

42

:

so growing up, the budget in the family

was that each kid was allotted $20 for

43

:

clothing each month, Didn't go far.

44

:

If you went to a department store, I

mean, even though it was the eighties,

45

:

nineties, it still didn't go very far.

46

:

So I realized if I wanted that money to

go farther, I could go to thrift stores.

47

:

And so I just got into the habit as

a teenager of going and searching.

48

:

And so it kind of became fun because

it's like the diamond in the rough.

49

:

And so I just got.

50

:

Very much into scoping out which

thrift stores are worth visiting

51

:

it which ones are good to hit often

and which ones are good to hit.

52

:

Just, you know, like have a higher

turnover or slower turnover.

53

:

And so I got into that.

54

:

And then I'm also, I always joke that

I'm half hippie, 'cause I try to be

55

:

as environmentally conscious as I.

56

:

Can be in my day.

57

:

And so I also just love the reuse,

reuse, reduce, recycle aspect of it.

58

:

Because in my mind you go and you see

this item and you're like, yeah, this

59

:

person didn't wanna wear it anymore.

60

:

But it's still got years

of life left in it.

61

:

And so I also just really

enjoy that component.

62

:

And third note is I feel like I'm

like a spokesperson for thrifting.

63

:

Third note is, what I love

about it is when you go into the

64

:

department stores, there's often a

very similar theme of everything.

65

:

And so if you're not into whatever that

theme is, you're a little outta luck.

66

:

And so when you go to a thrift store,

I think it's fun because you get

67

:

to look at many different styles.

68

:

And so it's just that,

that variety option.

69

:

Lacey: I get that.

70

:

because I've always been plus

size thrift stores are not,

71

:

very friendly to that size.

72

:

So that's part of, where my hesitation

has always come from because I don't

73

:

think that's a good way to spend my

energy, that resource bucket, if you will.

74

:

Sara: I heard.

75

:

Yeah.

76

:

that absolutely makes sense.

77

:

And it's not for everyone.

78

:

I mean, what's cool now is

there's a ton of thrifting online.

79

:

There's a lot of, different things, but

I'm not a spokesperson for thrifting.

80

:

That was just my little side piece.

81

:

Joy moment.

82

:

do you have one to share?

83

:

Lacey?

84

:

Lacey: So Violet is teething.

85

:

Okay.

86

:

And one of my favorite things.

87

:

About.

88

:

let me just I, 'cause I just

think it all, all the time.

89

:

So I need to say what a gift she

is for our family in so many ways.

90

:

She was not planned for, but

goodness gracious, is she just

91

:

adding so much to our family.

92

:

And one of my favorite things is seeing

the older two interact with her and Isaac

93

:

has lost what seems like a billion teeth.

94

:

he has no front teeth.

95

:

Top or bottom, they just

all like fell out at one.

96

:

so he has one of his bottom teeth coming

in and at Violet yesterday and was

97

:

like, you have a front tooth coming in.

98

:

And he was like talking

to her in a baby voice.

99

:

And it was just so under because it

100

:

Sara: That re

101

:

Lacey: the same front tooth on the bottom.

102

:

Sara: that reminds me of a cute story.

103

:

So one of my nieces lives very far

away and due to COVID in the distance.

104

:

We'd only ever communicated via FaceTime

as she grew up from a little bambino.

105

:

the first time we actually saw her in

person and she's in love with my son.

106

:

the first time we saw her she was

three or four, I can't remember.

107

:

And she ran up to him and she

looks down, not at a space.

108

:

She looks down and then she looks

up and she goes, you have feet.

109

:

I have feet.

110

:

She realized she didn't think he had feet

I I say that often and outta context, and

111

:

it makes me happy every time I say it.

112

:

You have beat.

113

:

as I mentioned last time,

I am back into threads.

114

:

I have figured out how to be on there

in a way that feels good and not crappy.

115

:

and I've been asking a lot of

fun prompts and I love responses.

116

:

And so I asked recently, what is the

best compliment you have ever received?

117

:

The one that still lights you up every

time you think of it, and these responses.

118

:

So what an amazing joy Ripple.

119

:

There's this one dude who I call

him like the dad of Threads.

120

:

He's just the sweetest, kindest,

like dad joke type of guy.

121

:

His name is Rex Racer Graham.

122

:

Lacey: Oh, he and I are,

I also am a fan of his.

123

:

Gotcha.

124

:

Sara: Oh my gosh.

125

:

Isn't he like the dad?

126

:

Okay.

127

:

So he said, somebody once said

to him, in whatever way it may be

128

:

possible, you may have saved a soul.

129

:

I was like, oh.

130

:

I mean, I feel like life

complete, like you've, you,

131

:

like everything else is gravy.

132

:

After that, this other gal, Jana

King Kay, a friend texted me,

133

:

quote, you are a lovable dork.

134

:

And I said, oh my gosh, I want, I

want a t-shirt that says that because

135

:

I love that term, a lovable dork.

136

:

It's so sweet.

137

:

And then there's this lady,

this, she's a grandmother.

138

:

wary Earthling too.

139

:

You know what's funny is I

never say these names out loud,

140

:

so it's actually really funny.

141

:

She said, her great niece, oh,

sorry, not a grandmother, great

142

:

niece, who is six years old, said

to her friend when introducing

143

:

her, she said she's really kind.

144

:

Which for a 6-year-old to say

that unprompted is, I mean, that's

145

:

like the best thing to hear.

146

:

Lacey: I

147

:

Sara: yeah.

148

:

Lacey: that's really cool.

149

:

Sara: And then I'm gonna do

one more by Cookie Zen milk.

150

:

Love that name.

151

:

Somebody said to this person, you always

step up when you see things that need

152

:

doing and you're always cheerful and kind.

153

:

Those are precious gifts that you share

with everyone, even those who have a

154

:

tendency towards being a pain in the ass.

155

:

Lacey: It does.

156

:

I mentioned this in the last episode,

one of my favorite compliments.

157

:

Can I share my other favorite one?

158

:

'cause it's more recent.

159

:

Sara: of course.

160

:

Lacey: I was talking about how I look.

161

:

And that I have a good faith, like my face

is put together in a way that is pleasant.

162

:

And I know that because people

talk to me no matter what.

163

:

Like if someone needs directions in a

one mile radius, they will find me and

164

:

they'll ask me because I have resting

nice face and seems safe because of

165

:

the way my features are put together.

166

:

anyway.

167

:

I said something about this and this

person responded and it's the fact of

168

:

how matter of fact, they were about it.

169

:

Like I wasn't sure if it was a compliment.

170

:

That's how matter of fact it was

of like, well, yeah, I mean, yeah,

171

:

the way your face is put together.

172

:

Renaissance painters, what a

renaissance master painters

173

:

that have lined up to paint you.

174

:

And I was like, just.

175

:

Lined, I think is the

word clamoring was used.

176

:

Like we clamoring a figure and I'm

just like it was said in such a

177

:

factual way not to make me feel good.

178

:

And it was just like, this is one of

the best compliments I've ever gotten.

179

:

Which I actually am not a big fan

of compliments on looks 'cause I

180

:

like to think that there are way

more interesting things about me.

181

:

if it's that renaissance master

painter is a flavoring to paint me,

182

:

that's a good, that's a good one.

183

:

Sara: Power of compliments.

184

:

I was one time in a job interview and.

185

:

It was, I can still, I can still picture

it vividly sitting at this big table.

186

:

I think it was my second round

interview and there was somebody else

187

:

in there, assisting with the interview.

188

:

And then all of a sudden the woman who I

did end up working for, she just stopped

189

:

and looked at me and she just said,

there is something about your smile all.

190

:

Lacey: The good,

191

:

Sara: Yeah.

192

:

No, no.

193

:

Like she was, she was, it was

funny the look on her face.

194

:

She was happy and mystified.

195

:

There's just something about your

smile and, I've been told throughout

196

:

my life a lot of stuff about my smile,

but I just thought it was funny 'cause

197

:

it was like we were being all formal

and proper and then all of a sudden,

198

:

just halfway through, she just, and

so I've always remembered that moment.

199

:

Lacey: Oh,

200

:

Sara: this is the power of a compliment.

201

:

Lacey: Absolutely.

202

:

Sara: It takes nothing to

give someone a compliment.

203

:

Think of that as your drop

of joy into the universe.

204

:

That may come back to you.

205

:

I love random compliments.

206

:

Like, Ooh, you wear that shirt so well.

207

:

Or like, oh my gosh, you

are bringing it today.

208

:

Lacey: That's

209

:

Sara: love your energy,

210

:

Lacey: love.

211

:

Sara: oh, I'm so glad you were here.

212

:

it made coming to this all worth it.

213

:

You know what I mean?

214

:

It's like that little

handwritten note, right?

215

:

So if you don't have pen and paper to

write that to somebody, just giving

216

:

somebody a few words, joy Ripples.

217

:

Joy ripples.

218

:

Lacey: have like a little

tangible, this is what you can

219

:

do to create a joy ripple today.

220

:

given a compliment.

221

:

Sara: Well, I see part of what we do,

not only with this podcast but with our

222

:

company, what our movement is helping

people learn and understand if you

223

:

didn't grow up in a household with.

224

:

F Joy or practice of gratitude

or if you didn't grow up

225

:

receiving compliments, right?

226

:

Like it's never too late to learn.

227

:

If so, somebody on thread said to

me, she asked something about Joy and

228

:

I wrote back a comment about, oh, I

feel pretty strong in my joy game.

229

:

But she wrote back and said, that's my

new goal is to have a strong joy game.

230

:

And I'm like, yeah, we don't all have it.

231

:

It's a practice.

232

:

It's a muscle.

233

:

It's something we have to do.

234

:

So if we can help people work on that joy

muscle, and if they call it compliment,

235

:

gratitude, whatever, we're here for it.

236

:

Lacey: So Sarah, We have tools,

right, for taking a step.

237

:

Maybe these are tools for finding

joy or spreading joy, and I'm

238

:

gonna put 'em on our tool.

239

:

Sara: Yes.

240

:

So instead of thinking of joy as passive,

that it has to come to you all the time.

241

:

There can be an active

and a passive, right?

242

:

I think passive is noticing and

active is putting it out there.

243

:

Lacey: Okay,

244

:

Sara: I'm so fired up.

245

:

Lacey: is fired up, So we've

gotta wrap this up so that she's

246

:

Sara: I,

247

:

Lacey: and

248

:

Sara: when you said fired

up and not in a good way.

249

:

I was like, oh, you're

sitting with a loaded diaper.

250

:

Lacey: really

251

:

Sara: I.

:

Lacey: thank you for joining
